Situs Beteng adalah sisa kejayaan Kerajaan Majapahit. Beteng dalam
bahasa Jawa atau benteng dalam bahasa Indonesia ini dibangun oleh Raja
Kertabumi atau terkenal dengan sebutan Brawijaya V. Konon kala itu
Majapahit diserang oleh kerajaan Demak. Penyerangan itu dipimpin Raden
Patah yang juga masih anak turun Raden Brawijaya V. Setelah kerajaan
Majapahit berhasil dikalahkan, Raja Brawijaya dan seluruh pasukannya
lari ke Tengger. Raden patah belum puas dan nekat mengejar Brawijaya
sampai ke Tengger. Terus terdesak, Brawijaya lari ke arah timur dan
akhirnya masuk ke Jember dan menemukan daerah lapang di daerah ini.
Kemudian dia mendirikan benteng pertahanan.
